Question/Description

Topic:              External Assessment

Learning Objectives:
·                                 To highlight the external factors that can have an impact on company’s operations
·                                 To enlighten the impact of External Factors on company’s strategies
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this activity, the student will understand:
·                                 Significance of external assessment of company.
·                                 How company incorporates change of external factors in its own strategies?
The Case
GOURMET started its operations as a bakery and confectioner shop in 1987 in Lahore. With focus on customer’s need and serving quality products, it has diversified into a versatile food company and has spread its network all over the city of Lahore. The products include bakery items, mithai, dairy products, beverages, traditional halwas and premium bakery items/beverages etc. It has also extended the operations by introducing restaurants and providing catering for all occasion.
It is the largest Lahore-based food retail chain of Pakistan having competitors like Shezan, Doce’, Cakes n Bakes and the Premium bakery brands (Kitchen Cuisine, Masooms, Moods). Shezan restaurant inauguration prompted Gourmet to come and deal in restaurants as well.  Similarly the recent trend of premium bakery brands resulted in the launching of premium sub-brand of gourmet bakers i.e. Bon Vivant.
Point to Ponder
Taking into consideration the above-stated developments, identify and enlist the major External Factors which might have contributed in Gourmet’s business diversification.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SOLUTION IDEA

The term "diversification" is usually associated with a change in the characteristics of the
company's product line and/or market, in contrast to market penetration, market development,
and product development, which represent other types of change in product-market structure.
External factors are those factors which are external to the environment of the GOURMET.
Now discussion is open for u people.. Everybody can contribute to this discussion, in the end we can conclude a solution

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Return expectations

in my point of view:
the external factors may include
·                                 rivalry challenges
·                                 competitors
·                                 customers' demands and needs
·                                 related market environment
baqi ap log btayen mere zehan main to yhi aye

Why diversification?
Often companies diversify for a host of good reasons. In other cases, it becomes a survival strategy when single product or service strategy reaches the limits of revenue generation. To achieve genuine success from planned diversification firms must reinforce internal development; pursue value-chain acquisitions, form strategic alliances and joint ventures. Often you will find that each route has its own set of issues like benefits and limitations.
However, diversification must be driven by (1) opportunities afforded in the business environment, (2) in possession of right resources and (3) own the right skills sets to make structural adjustments to extend the range of goods or services to your exising customers or new markets. By extending your portfolio of products or services, you can ensure new regular revenue streams to boost growth prospects.

SOLUTION IDEA:

there are two cases to discuss,
The actual risk is higher for which class of common stockholders.
The actual risk is lower for which class of common stockholders.

---------------------------------------------------------

Risk
1. uncertainty about a project's future profitability.
2. it can be measured by sigma Npv, sigma IRR, and beta.
3. risk of the projected increase in the firm's and stockholder's risk.
There are three types of risk.
Stand-alone risk-Eaziest measurement, intuitive approach.
Corporate risk-mainly relates to creditors, customers, suppliers & Employees.
Market or beta risk-Theoretically best

---------------------------------------------------------

Read this statement out
Standalone risk measures the dangers associated with a single facet of a company's operations or by holding a specific asset. In portfolio management, standalone risk measures the undiversified risk (Systematic Risk) of an individual asset. For a company, standalone risk allows them to determine a project's risk as if it were operating as an independent entity.

What I can perceive so far from the Case is, The risk would be higher for those common stockholders, who just invest in a single stock or in a particular section of the company. As they put all their investments in a single section and entire return on investment is now dependent on the performance of that specific project. If that project couldn't perform well, because of any reason, their investment would return nothing.
Elaborate in your own words a little more.

------------------------------------------------------

Definition of 'Standalone Risk'

The risk associated with a single operating unit of a company or asset. Standalone involves the risks created by a specific division or project, which would not exist if operations in that area were to cease.

---------------------------------------------------------

RISK
The chance that an investments' actual return will be different than expected. Risk includes the possibility of losing some or all of the original investment.

---------------------------------------------------------

The risk is high if the project is a big one project and there are few stockholders. Each one of the stockholders will invest a huge amount hence the risk will be high.
The risk is not high if the project is a small one project and there are more stockholders. Each one of the stockholders will invest a little amount hence the risk will not be high.

I think, two classes of shareholders are preference shareholders and ordinary shareholders, n less risk for preference shareholders bcoz they received fixed dividend regardless of profit or loss and higher for ordinary they received according to P/L.

I think the risk will be higher for those stockholders who have not diversified their investment. and the risk will be lower for those stockholders who have diversified their investment.

Describe just four duties of Brotherhood in your own words.

  • 1:Personal Aid. I owe my siting-companion three things: On his approach I greet him; on his arrival I make him welcome; when he sits I make him comfortable.
  • 2:Holding one’s tongue. One of you listen to gossip about his brother, then adds to it and passes it to exaggerated.
  • 3:Speaking out. The Muslim is brother to the Muslim. He does not wrong him, does not forsake him, does not betray him.
  • 4:Loyalty and sincerity. Among the seven whom God keeps in his shadow are also two men who love each other for God’s sake, constant whether together or apart.

In my opinion, switch statements id better than If-Else. Switch statements have its best uses then there are more environments. As we know that if statements checks for all the conditions and then when the condition is matched then the following body inside it is executed but this is not the case with switch condition as it directly checks for the compatible conditions and executes the code.
    The reason behind the selection of switch statement is;
Working speed of switch statement is much faster than if-else.
The reason is that compiler produces a jump table for a switch in the course of assembling. Thus, during accomplishment, as a substitute of testing which case is contented, it only picks which case has to be accomplished.
It is more understandable and in parallel to if-else testimonials.
Switch statement is more manageable for taking higher level of transactions than if-else

    ----------------------------------------

Dont Be Confused Keep Keen Attention on Question :)
    This is your gdb solution:
Switch statement is much faster than if-else due to the following reasons:
    Switch statement is better because
    1) compiler generates a jump table during compilation.
    2) instead of checking which case is true, it only moves to that case which has to be executed.
    3) It is more readable.
    4) It is more manageable regarding above scenario.

    ------------------------------------------

I asked Teacher about it and here is her reply:
    Dear Student,
First of all, in GDB coding is not required. You have to select a decision structure according to the given scenario and have to provide the reasons. Then login the VULMS, click on GDB icon and post your comments.
    Transaction examples are:
a user deposit cash in his/her account.
A user withdraws some cash from his/her account.
A user checks the balance of his/her account etc.

    Question/Description
Learning Objectives: The students are expected to learn and apply the cost-volume-profit analysis.
    Scenario:

Aini & Alex (Pvt.) Limited launched its fashion accessories in ladies’ purses few years back in Karachi with the aim to let them handle their necessities with comfort. Now, its brands are famous for stylish and affordable accessories.
At the start of new financial year, the sales manager of the Aini & Alex (Pvt) limited has to plan about future sales of its bags section, consisting of two product lines - leather handbags and clutch purses. To plan about future sales, the sales manager is in need of data about per unit cost and profit for each product line from the company’s accountant.
Accountant demonstrates the per unit data that shows currently the company is selling leather handbags at Rs. 300 per unit and clutch purse at Rs 190 per unit respectively. Other cost data is as follows:
    Details
        Leather Handbags
      Clutch Purses

    Rs. P/U
    Rs. P/U
    Variable cost
    130.00
    110.00
    Fixed cost
    144.00
    52.50
    Profit
    26.00
    27.50

Considering the above mentioned information, answer the following:
    a)   Determine per unit contribution margin, contribution margin ratio for each of the product.
    b)   If the sales manager of Aini & Alex (Pvt.) Limited decides to increase production substantially any of the above two products (manufactured units are expected to be sold in the market), determine which product will be more profitable for the company to produce assuming that cost behavior pertains remain unchanged.
    c)    Support your answer in part (b) based on logical reason.

                SOLUTION IDEA'S

Per unit contribution margin = selling price per unit - variable cost per unit
Contribution margin ratio = contribution margin rs / sales in rs
Do not try to copy for any solution so  for better understanding listen the lecture no 29, 30 so you can understand it and will be helpful for final term.
